In the News‘Dynamic Taiwan’ to shine at Frankfurt Book Fair
Nature-themed literature and electronic publishing technology will be the driving forces behind efforts to promote Taiwan’s publishing industry at the upcoming Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany. “We hope to give visitors to the fair a more complete view of Taiwan and its publishers through highlighting the country’s nature and technology,” said Lin Wen-chi, executive director of the Taipei Book Fair Foundation, Sept. 28. According to the TBFF, organizers of Taiwan’s delegation, 117 local publishers will participate in the event under the banner of “Dynamic Taiwan.” In keeping with this theme, Lin said a section of the Taiwan Pavilion is dedicated to showcasing the development of electronic publishing and e-reader technology in Taiwan. The five-day fair, which kicks off Oct. 6, is billed as the most important marketplace for books, media, rights and licences worldwide. Close to 7,000 exhibitors from 113 countries are expected to participate in the event. Lin said local writer Liu Ka-shiang is booked to attend the “Nature Writing in Contemporary Taiwan” forum, where he will discuss his work with Jorg Magenau, a freelance journalist and biographer of German author Christa Wolf. Liu’s writing, which blends travel, natural lives and the history of Taiwan, has won glowing accolades from readers islandwide. “Taiwan is a land constantly under threat by typhoons and other natural disasters, yet people continue living their lives with optimism,” Liu said. “I want to share my thoughts and observations on this matter with readers from Europe.” More contemporary Taiwanese writers appearing at the fair include Chu Tien-wen, Li Chiao and Wang Wen-hsing. Tech-savvy novelists such as Egoyan Zhang, Giddens Ko and Tong Wei-ge will also be in attendance. (JSM) |
