Taiwan national athlete Wei Chen-chan won the men’s division of the 2011 Miaoli International Triathlon Championship April 10 by clocking a time of 1:49:05 in the two-day, 51.5-kilometer race in western Taiwan. Meanwhile, Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic took top spot for the second consecutive year in the women’s race with a time of 1:54:24. Chang Luo-yi, Taiwan’s top female marathoner, finished third with a time of 2:08:49. More than 600 hundred triathletes from home and abroad competed in this year’s event.

Frequent shopping increases survival among older people in Taiwan, according to a study led by research fellow Chang Yu-hung of the National Health Research Institutes’ Health Policy Research and Development division. The study found that senior citizens who go shopping regularly have a 27 percent less risk of death than their counterparts who rarely or never shop. Chang studied 1,841 Taiwanese over the age of 65 in the survey conducted between 1999 and 2008. The study was published online April 6 in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

The National Museum of Taiwan Literature’s research collection and database of contemporary Taiwanese authors formally came online April 9 after seven years of preparation. It features 100 volumes of compiled data on modern Taiwanese writers, as well as an eight-volume bibliography of reviews and 15-volume collection of research on selected authors.
