The success of ‘Seediq Bale’

On Sept. 9, the highly anticipated Taiwanese film “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” was released islandwide to much acclaim and healthy box office numbers. The first installment of this two-part movie kept audiences on the edge of their seats and champing at the bit for part two, which opens at the end of the month.

Portraying the Wushe Uprising of 1930 when Seediq tribal leaders in mountainous central Taiwan launched a revolt against Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), the film succeeds in highlighting the struggle of these people as they confront the onset of modernity and attempt to mitigate its impact on traditional ways of life.

The fact that Seediq Bale is proving such a hit comes as no surprise. The movie’s highly emotive subject matter appeals to all segments of society, as demonstrated at its premiere Sept. 4 at the Presidential Office Plaza in Taipei.

Attended by ROC President Ma Ying-jeou and his opponent in next year’s presidential election, Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, the screening underscores the importance of this movie to the people of Taiwan and the role it can play in fostering a better understanding of the past.

Following the premiere, Ma and Tsai demonstrated they were on the same page when speaking of the film’s worth as a vehicle for learning about Taiwan and developing a better understanding of the trials and tribulations faced by different groups in society. Both leaders also agreed that as an entertainment product, the movie is a standout performer.

Ma and Tsai’s remarks reaffirm the fact that Taiwan’s 14 officially recognized indigenous groups remain somewhat of a mystery at home and abroad. This is where the local film industry can lend a helping hand by turning out offerings drawing on the nation’s aboriginal heritage.

But for potential projects to meet the high standards of Seediq Bale, more outstanding individuals such as the movie’s director Wei Te-sheng will need to step into the breach. Wei spent 13 years on his NT$700 million (US$24 million) labor of cinematic love, and the fact that he never lost faith in his ability to bring this gripping tale to the silver screen is testament to his passion, dedication and unyielding commitment to the creative process and Seediq people.

With millions of cinephiles set to learn about a largely forgotten chapter of Taiwan’s history courtesy of Seediq Bale, the challenge for the local film industry is to capitalize on this momentum and produce more releases in the same vein. This will promote greater understanding of the island and its people while serving as a welcome reminder that Taiwan is capable of putting together top-notch motion pictures boasting international appeal.
