Taiwan prioritizes post-Morakot reconstruction

The ROC government will continue working with the private sector and nongovernmental organizations in rebuilding regions of Taiwan devastated by 2009’s Typhoon Morakot.

Chern Jenn-chuan, CEO of the Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Council, said April 9 that restoration of industries in the typhoon-hit areas is of the utmost importance. “We hope that all parties can work together as before in helping to breathe life into battered local economies," he added.

Chern made the comments at a meeting in Taipei with representatives from the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, China Steel Corp., information technology giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., giant chip-maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., the ROC Red Cross Society and World Vision Taiwan.

Chern thanked Hon Hai for sponsoring the Yonglin Organic Farm in Kaohsiung City, and TSMC for helping Lijia Village in Chiayi County build tea and bamboo shoot processing plants.

He also praised NGOs such as the ROC Red Cross Society, saying that the money and resources they poured in have helped speed up industrial development in battered regions.

In addition, Chern praised China Steel for agreeing to purchase agricultural products from regions devastated by Morakot.

Typhoon Morakot was one of the most destructive storms to strike Taiwan in the last 50 years, bringing more than 2,500 millimeters of rain in just four days and claiming 700 lives. (HZW)
