Ou Chin-der, chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp., signed a deal in Tokyo May 24 under which Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Japan’s famous bullet trains, will supply THSRC with NT$6.9 billion (US$232.75 million) worth of 700T train carriages between 2013 and 2016. Ou said the deal will meet the needs of Taiwan’s high-speed railway for the next five to 10 years.
On May 24, the Executive Yuan approved the renegotiated Agreement on Government Procurement adopted by the World Trade Organization’s government procurement committee March 30. It will now be sent to the Legislative Yuan for review.
Taiwan ranked 29th out of 132 countries surveyed for the World Economic Forum’s latest Enabling Trade Index, dropping one spot from the previous survey. Executive Yuan spokesman Hu Yu-wei said May 24 that Taiwan’s low ranking in the market access subindex was due to the fact that the country has yet to sign free trade agreements with its main trading partners, resulting in high tariffs on Taiwan products in overseas markets. Hu stressed the government would use the survey results as reference in mapping out measures to boost Taiwan’s competitiveness. (SB-THN)
