Youth ambassadors promote Taiwan abroad

Students from universities in Taiwan are excited about their upcoming cultural exchange trips to ROC allies and friends. (CNA)

A total of 43 groups of college students from 25 universities in Taiwan will visit 38 countries between June and August to promote cultural exchanges and strengthen bilateral relations, according to the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 28.

Among the near 40 nations, 21 are ROC allies, MOFA said.

“Launched in 2009 with six youth groups to our allies in the South Pacific, the International Youth Ambassador Exchange Program has expanded gradually to our African and Central and South American allies, as well as to nations without diplomatic ties with the ROC,” said Simon S.Y. Ko, deputy minister of MOFA.

Ko noted that this year’s ambassadors are traveling to 10 nations that previous groups with the program never visited before: Argentina, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Germany, Israel, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Vatican City.

Lu Yu-cheng, an electrical engineering student at National Taipei University of Technology and head of the NTUT delegation, said his group is due to visit Saint Christopher and Nevis for two weeks. “The nation is a tropical country,” Lu noted. “We will bring solar-powered toy cars and teach the local elementary school students about solar power.”

Initiated by MOFA, the program aims to strengthen ties between the ROC and its friends and allies, and promote cultural exchange between youths from both sides. (HZW)
