Torrential rains that began falling June 9 in Taiwan have caused agricultural losses in excess of NT$144.72 million (US$4.82 million), the ROC Council of Agriculture said June 12. The figure includes damage to crops, lands and facilities, and could increase significantly as more accurate tallies become available.
The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra is slated to head to Italy for a series of performances in the latter half of June. The first performance will be in Trieste at the Teatro Rossetti June 19, followed by shows in Ravenna and Ravello during music festivals in the two cities June 21 and 23. ROC first lady Chow Mei-ching is traveling with the orchestra in support.
Taiwan has the second best employment outlook in the world for the third quarter of 2012, according to the results of a survey by U.S.-based Manpower Group released June 12. A total of 44 percent of Taiwan employers polled said they intend to hire new staff, while just 4 percent said they plan to lay off workers, for a 40 percent net employment outlook for the country, placing it behind only India globally.
The 14th International Flat Panel Display Exposition, or Display Taiwan 2012, is set to be held June 19 to 21 at the Taipei World Trade Center’s Nangang Exhibition Hall. More than 200 manufacturers from countries and territories around the world, including France, Japan, mainland China, South Korea, the U.K. and U.S., are expected to set up nearly 500 booths at the show, according to the event’s organizer, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). Touch panel and active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) products and technologies are the main themes of this year’s show, TAITRA said. (SB)
