ROC athletes to contest 14 sports at London Olympics

A total of 44 athletes will represent the ROC in 14 sports at the Summer Olympics set to begin later this month in London.

The events comprise archery, badminton, cycling, fencing, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, and weightlifting, according to the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee July 9.

The full delegation of 100 members, including 28 coaches as well as medical staff, officials and distinguished guests, will be headed by Lin Hong-dow, vice president of the CTOC.

Liu Tsung-ta, coach of taekwondo athlete Yang Shu-chun, will be able to make the trip after the World Taekwondo Federation notified the CTOC earlier the same day that his 20-month suspension had been lifted.

Liu was suspended for protesting Yang’s disqualification after a bout at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, when she was accused of wearing extra electronic sensors in her socks.

The team will depart for the U.K. in two groups July 16 and 22 to take part in the games scheduled for July 27 to Aug. 12. (THN)
