MAC holds cross-strait ties seminar in US

An ROC Mainland Affairs Council-organized conference on the opportunities and challenges stemming from cross-strait relations is set to get under way July 12 in Washington.

The two-day international conference, which was first held in 2010, is jointly overseen by National Chengchi University’s Institute of International Relations and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“The event will increase understanding among all interested parties on the future direction of cross-strait ties and issues of mutual concern,” a MAC official said July 11.

Promoting stable relations between Taiwan and mainland China, along with regional peace, is an ROC government policy that continues to pay significant dividends, the official said, adding that this approach has been widely recognized and welcomed by the international community.

Participants comprise senior think tank experts from Taiwan, the U.S. and mainland China, including Arthur Shun-fang Ding, director of the IIR; Tsai Ming-yen, professor of National Chung Hsing  University; Richard Bush, director of Brookings Institution Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies; Bonnie Glaser, senior follow of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies; David Lampton, professor of Johns Hopkins University; Kenneth Liberthal,  director of the John L. Thornton China Center; Douglas H. Paal, vice president of the CEIP; Robert Sutter and Nancy Tucker, scholars of Georgetown University;  and academics from National Tsinghua University in Beijing.
