Former Utah Gov. Huntsman commences 3-day visit to Taiwan

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will meet with ROC President Ma Ying-jeou, Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Chin-tien Yang and Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Francis Kuo-hsin Liang during a July 16-18 visit to Taiwan.

Huntsman will also deliver a speech on contemporary U.S. challenges and opportunities, according to the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs July 16.

“His decision to come to Taiwan at this time clearly illustrates his friendship and support for the country,” the ministry noted.

MOFA said Huntsman is highly respected in U.S. political circles, having served in a number of important posts, including U.S. ambassador to mainland China, deputy assistant secretary of commerce, deputy trade representative and ambassador to Singapore. He was also a candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Huntsman has many close friends in Taiwan, MOFA said. He has visited several times over the years and lived on the island for a period of time in the past with his wife.

The ministry expressed welcome for Huntsman’s trip, pointing out that it will be helpful in terms of increasing his understanding of Taiwan’s current political and economic situation as well as issues in Taiwan-U.S. relations. (SB-THN)
