Taipei gears up for Taiwan Culinary Exhibition

The annual Taiwan Culinary Exhibition, set to get under way Aug. 17 at the Taipei World Trade Center, is poised to attract record crowds and boost the island’s profile on the international cuisine scene.

Focusing on Taiwan traditional delicacies, the four-day fair includes an exhibition of the island’s food culture spanning three centuries, according to event organizer Taipei-based Chinese Gourmet Association.

“There will be a special area showcasing the delicacies and unique dining customs of Lukang, Tainan and Wanhua, three of the island’s oldest towns,” a CGA official said.

In addition, traditional settings in which the dishes were prepared and served have been re-created as a way of authentically showcasing Taiwan’s culinary pedigree, the official added.

This year’s festival also features a contest for students and faculty members from Taiwan cooking schools; special banquets for the health conscious; and exhibits of agricultural products from Taichung City and Nantou County.

Visitors will have the chance to take part in cooking demonstrations staged by celebrity chefs from Taiwan and mainland China, while hotels and restaurants will offer discounted packages combining gourmet food and accommodation at some of the island’s most famous resorts and restaurants. (JSM)
