Touch Taiwan 2012 kicks off in Taipei

Touch Taiwan 2012 kicked off amid much fanfare Aug. 29 at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, showcasing the island’s latest offerings of display and touch technologies.

Nearly 300 firms set up more than 700 booths at the three-day event, with a product focus on 3-D displays and active matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AMOLED, displays.

Also being staged during the show is Flat Panel Display International Taiwan 2012, the first symposium co-sponsored by event organizer Taiwan Display Union Association and Tokyo-based Nikkei Business Publication Inc. The latter is renowned for putting on Yokohama’s FPD International, the biggest annual display exhibition in Japan.

Boasting a lineup of 25 keynote speakers, the two-day symposium offers attendees the opportunity to participate in seminars on next-generation display technology. Invited industry experts include representatives from local and global heavyweights such as Applied Materials Inc., Corning Inc., Japan Display Inc., Panasonic Liquid Crystal Display Co. Ltd. and Sony Corp.

Notably, Paul S.L. Peng, president of local panel-maker AU Optronics Corp. and chairman of TDUA, is scheduled to deliver an address on how firms in Taiwan, Japan and mainland China can collaborate for win-win-win strategies.

An industry analyst familiar with the matter said the event is a “shot in the arm” for Taiwan’s display panel sector, which continues in a slump due to the European sovereign debt crisis and global economic slowdown.

“All eyes are sure to be on the local firms’ latest touch technologies, which are seen as a major driver of growth going forward,” the analyst added.

According to TDUA, a special summit was held Aug. 29 on the sidelines of Touch Taiwan, bringing participants up to speed on the cross-strait flat panel TV supply chain and market developments in mainland China. (JSM)
