Taiwan offshore wind farms to boost capacity

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has selected three companies to receive subsidies to build model offshore wind farms with a generating capacity of 300 megawatts, an official said Jan. 25.

Fuhai Offshore Windfarm Ltd. plans to build 30 turbines with a combined output of 108 MW 11 kilometers off the coast on Changhua County’s Fangyuan Township.

Formosa Wind Power Co. Ltd. will also construct 30 turbines with 108 MW total output 5 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli County’s Zhunan Township.

State-run utility Taiwan Power Co. will also build a 108MW-150MW wind farm off Changhua County coast.

The output value of the wind farms when completed in 2020 will be NT$48 billion (US$1.65 billion), the Bureau of Energy under the MOEA said.

The bureau said its goal is to install 300 MW of offshore wind power capacity annually so that by 2020 offshore capacity installed or under construction will total 3,000 MW.

Alongside 1,200 MW of land-based capacity this will provide more than a third of total energy from renewable resources, the official said. (SDH)
