Taiwan’s composite economic indicator flashed “blue,” for the sixth consecutive month in April, with the composite score standing at 14 for the third month running, the Council for Economic Planning and Development announced May 28. An official said the sluggish domestic economy should begin rebounding in the second half of this year provided the mainland Chinese economy does not experience a downturn, the U.S. economy continues to recover, and the EU sovereign debt crisis eases.
Taiwan taekwondo athlete Lee Hsing-hua won a gold medal in the women’s under-49 kilogram competition, while Wei Chen-yang grabbed silver in the men’s under-58 kg event May 28 at the 12th World University Taekwondo Championship being held in Pocheon, South Korea, from May 25 to 30. Taiwan has bagged two gold and two silver medals so far at this year’s tournament.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched a short-film contest May 28 to raise public awareness of overseas travel safety and emergency support measures. Awards will be presented to the top three entrants in categories including best directing, editing, screenplay and artistic design, in two separate competitions—one for students, the other for the general public. Total prize money amounts to NT$1 million (US$433,727).
A total of 11 Taiwan universities rank among the top 100 universities in Asia for 2012, according to the results of a survey by the U.K.-based firm Quacquarelli Symonds released May 28. National Taiwan University in Taipei City placed highest on the list, at 20th overall, the best showing by a Taiwan university in the four years that the survey has been conducted. (SB)
