Taiwan’s per capita income is higher than that of South Korea if gross domestic product is calculated using purchasing power parity, the ROC Central Bank said May 30. The bank made the statement in response to a local media report that South Korea’s per capita GDP surpassed Taiwan’s in 2004 and that the gap has continued to widen since then. Taiwan’s per capita GDP adjusted for PPP is also currently higher than those of several advanced nations, including France, Japan and the United Kingdom, the bank added.
Five Taiwan universities rank among the world’s top 100 universities that are less than half a century old, according to a survey by the U.K.-based magazine Times Higher Education. The highest ranking Taiwan university on the list is National Sun Yat-sen University, founded in 1980, which placed No. 30 globally. It was followed by National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, which came in at No. 55, Yuan Ze University, No. 70, Feng Chia University, No. 89, and National Yang Ming University, No. 95.
Taiwan taekwondo athletes Tseng Yi-hsuan and Yeh Sung-chiang each won bronze medals in their respective weight categories on the final day of the 12th World University Taekwondo Championship held in Pocheon, South Korea, May 25 to 30. Taiwan finished with a total of two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. It also placed first in the women’s team sparring event at the tournament.
National University of Kaohsiung said May 30 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanoi National University of Education on academic exchanges. Under the agreement, Taiwan’s first Vietnamese language testing center will be set up at NUK this August. The center will increase trade and economic exchanges between Taiwanese and Vietnamese officials, according to the university. (SB)
