Taiwan NGOs head to Rio for Earth Summit

Taiwan nongovernmental organizations will exchange views on environmental issues with their counterparts from around the world at the U.N. Conference on Sustainable Development June 20 to 22 in Rio de Janeiro.

“We look forward to learning what other countries are doing in the field of green economy and the pursuit of sustainability,” Juju C.S. Wang, president of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union, said June 11 at a news conference in Taipei City.

In Taiwan, Wang said, the idea of a green economy has been simplified by the government to focus solely on carbon reduction and green energy, so the experiences of other countries may help broaden local vision and knowledge.

The 15 members of the delegation, representing several environmental groups, will head for Brazil June 13 as civic participants, as Taiwan is not a member state of the U.N.

Wang said the deputation will sign up for major discussions, present Taiwan’s conservation efforts and issues of special concern, and introduce the 22 wild bird species endemic to the country.

“We hope to improve the interaction of Taiwan’s NGOs with green groups from other parts of the world on issues concerning the global environment,” he said. (THN)
