MOC targets Taiwan films for promotion abroad

Taiwan’s film industry can help raise the visibility of the ROC on the international stage, Minister of Culture Lung Ying-tai said June 11.

Lung made the remarks while attending a promotional event for 15 local films scheduled to be released in the second half of the year—including Chang Hsun-wei’s “Double Trouble,” Yang Ya-che’s “GF * BF” and Zero Chou’s “Lovers are Gamblers.”

“Movies transcend language, class and cultural barriers; they document memories and emotions that cannot easily be explained,” Lung said.

“I hope local filmmakers can set their eyes on the international stage and the local film industry will make an effort to nurture creative talents from Taiwan,” she added.

Noting that the Taiwan film industry needs the support of local moviegoers, Lung urged the people of Taiwan to find the time to watch more films made by local artists.

The Ministry of Culture, for its part, “will provide assistance in linking the animation, literature, movie and music industries,” she added.

The MOC would also help to promote a better understanding of movies in Taiwan’s schools, especially those in remote areas, Lung said.

In response to Lung’s remarks, director Chou noted that “local films still have a long way to go.” To make an impression at international film festivals and among global audiences, “Taiwan moviemakers must strive to make unique and unforgettable films,” she said. (HZW)
