Taiwan to attend APEC ministerial meetings in June

A delegation of ROC government officials is slated to take part in the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ministerial meetings in St. Petersburg, Russia, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 12.

Woody T.J. Duh, deputy minister of economics, will attend the Energy Ministerial Meeting June 24 to 25 and the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Mining June 27 to 28, said Lily L. W. Hsu, director of MOFA’s Department of International Organizations.

Some of the topics to be discussed at the energy meeting include price volatility in energy markets, incentives for private sectors to invest in the energy industry, diffusion of new technologies that encourage energy efficiency and the utilization of alternative energy, Hsu said.

The mining meeting will address the sustainable development of mining and metallurgy in the Asia-Pacific region, integration of economic investment and the innovation and environment for relevant projects, the director continued.

Wang Ju-hsuan, minister of the Council of Labor Affairs, will take part in the Women and the Economy Forum June 28 to 30, Hsu said, adding that the forum will explore issues such as innovative growth, business opportunities and human capital.

Health Minister Chiu Wen-ta will head the delegation for a high level meeting on health and economy co-hosted by APEC’s Health Working Group and Life Sciences Innovation Forum June 27, according to Hsu.

Themed Investing in a Healthy Life Course, the event will focus on the value of health investment throughout one’s life, particularly on how economies can reduce the cost of health care and strengthen productivity through disease detection, prevention, diagnosis and management, Hsu pointed out.

In addition, Chiu is scheduled to give a speech titled “A Life Course Approach to Reducing the Economic Burden of Disease,” Hsu said. (HZW)
