The Game Developers Conference Taipei Summit opened June 26, attracting more than 600 local and overseas participants to Taiwan’s first-ever forum on the biggest trends in Asian and Western game development. Supported by the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taipei-based Game Industry Promotion Alliance, the two-day event is considered the world’s leading platform for developers, programmers and other digital gaming professionals to exchange ideas for shaping their industry. Walter M.S. Yeh, executive vice president of summit organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), said Taipei’s hosting of the event reflects the increasingly important role Taiwan plays in the global game market. “We anticipate the summit enhancing the capabilities of Taiwan designers while fast-tracking sector development and creating business opportunities for homegrown firms,” he said. During the event, business leaders and industry experts from Japan, South Korea, Sweden, the U.K., U.S. and mainland China will join those from Taiwan in delivering 26 seminars highlighting key developments in console, online, mobile and social networking games. The summit also includes exhibitions showcasing the latest products and trade meetings for local developers with Japanese mobile gaming service providers. According to the MOEA, game development is an integral part of the digital content industry, one of Taiwan’s six emerging industries targeted for strategic promotion.
