Revisions by the ROC Ministry of National Defense and Ministry of the Interior to the standards for the physical classification of recruits formally came into force July 7, ahead of the implementation of the nation’s volunteer military system in 2014. More than 6,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the new standards that exempt those with certain physical conditions—ranging from severe nearsightedness to arrhythmia—from military service duties. The changes are not retroactive.
The number of births in Taiwan reached 19,482 for June, marking an increase of 22.79 percent over the same period last year and the highest monthly total since March 2009, the Ministry of the Interior announced July 7. There were 107,508 births over the first six months of 2012, up by 17.29 percent year on year, according to the ministry.
Taiwan defeated Hong Kong 12-2 in the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament of Little League Baseball July 8 to earn a spot in the Little League World Series to be held in Williamsport, Pa., in August. The Taiwan squad hammered Hong Kong with 12 hits, with the game being called after just four innings on account of the 10-run mercy rule.
Taiwan’s Pai Hsiao-ma grabbed her first Grand Prix Gold badminton title by defeating Japan’s Kaori Imabeppu in the finals of the U.S. Badminton Open in Orange County, Calif., July 8. Ranked 27th in the world and the top seed in the tournament, Pai secured Taiwan’s second straight U.S. Open women’s singles title after Tai Tzu-ying won it last year. (SB)
