A Taiwan fishing vessel and its 26-member crew are safe following their release by Somali pirates 18 months after being hijacked in the southeast Indian Ocean Dec. 25, 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 18.
New private investment in Taiwan reached NT$698 billion (US$23.28 billion) for the first six months of 2012, marking an increase of roughly 10 percent over the figure for the same period a year earlier, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said July 17. The ministry’s goal for the whole of 2012 has been set at NT$1.1 trillion. The number of investments amounted to 1,204 for the January-June period. The information electronics sector saw the most investment at NT$250.1 billion, or 55 percent of the target for the entire year set by the ministry.
The Institute for Information Industry signed an agreement with Hanoi’s information department July 17 under which the institute will assist, through Taiwanese firms, the Vietnamese capital in formulating a five-to-10 year e-government plan, which will include setting up related infrastructure and application services and developing a budget for the project.
Asteroid 237187, recently discovered by National Central University’s Graduate Institute of Astronomy, has been formally named Zhonglihe after Taiwanese author Chung Li-ho. It is the first time an asteroid has been named after a modern Taiwanese literary figure. (SB)
