ROC Vice President Wu Den-yih inspected a high-tech science park and attended the inauguration of a vocational training center on the third day of his visit to the Dominican Republic. A day earlier, he was a guest at Dominican President Danilo Medina’s swearing-in ceremony. Wu’s next stop is Belize on his 12-day state trip to Latin America before returning to Taiwan via Los Angeles.
A total of 63 percent of people in Taiwan support the nation’s membership in the World Trade Organization as well as the ROC government’s policy of economic and trade liberalization, according to a public opinion survey released by the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs Aug. 17. In the poll, 60 percent of respondents voiced their support for the government’s goal for Taiwan to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership within the next few years, while 58 percent said they are concerned that the free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea will have a negative impact on Taiwan-U.S. trade.
The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics announced Aug. 17 that it has lowered its forecast for Taiwan’s gross domestic product growth for this year to 1.66 percent. The previous forecast was 2.08 percent. The DGBAS cited slowing global economic growth momentum and the resulting negative impact on Taiwan exports for the downward revision.
A short documentary on Taiwanese and Japanese soldiers stationed at a naval base for Shinyo suicide vessels in the outlying Penghu Islands during World War II will be introduced at a news conference Aug. 20 in Taipei City. Produced by director Khan Lee, brother of world-famous director Ang Lee, and directed by up-and-coming Wan Pei-chyi, the documentary features first-hand accounts by two of the Japanese soldiers stationed in Wangan Township during the period.
