'Monologue' wins international prize in France

Chen Yun-ju, a master’s degree student from Taiwan, won the special jury award at the 2009 International Digital Arts Festival of Enghien-les-Bains.

Her interdisciplinary work “Monologue” was inspired by “Nü Shu,” a script created by ancient Chinese women. She is studying in the Department of Multimedia and Animation Art, National Taiwan University of Art.

More than 60 teams from around the world competed in this year’s festival. After two screening processes, a first prize, second prize, and special jury award winners were selected. This is the first time Taiwan artists participated in this international contest.

Born in 1980, Chen Yun-ju integrates dance, music, and images in “Monologue.” Inspired by the diary writing experiences of women, the work reflects the minds of females who feel suppressed in a patriarchal society. She projects the mystic characters of “Nü Shu” on the wall while dancers dance along with these delicate, unique characters.

Lin Pey-chwen, Chen’s instructor, pointed out that the invention of Nü Shu derived from restrictions on women in traditional Chinese society. It was invented for secret correspondence among female friends because they were not allowed to read and write. Nü Shu was in circulation in Chiangyong County, Hunan Province and parts of Guanghsi Province, China.

The International Digital Arts Festival of Enghien-les-Bains, near Paris, in its fourth year, is the only government-funded annual digital art fair. Different themes dominate each year’s fest, and there is an open call for entries. “Dance and Digital Art” is the theme this year. (TYH-THN)
