A scholarship program initiated by the Ministry of Education has helped art and design students from Taiwan achieve international recognition.

Over the past year, 20 students have been offered scholarships to study arts and design for a year at top universities overseas, including in France, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, the MOE said at a news conference Nov. 16.

After taking part in a digital media program at New Zealand’s Auckland University of Technology, Chen Jia-ying and three other students became trainees at Oktobor, an Auckland-based animation company, to work on “The Penguins of Madagascar,” a TV series that aired on the Nickelodeon television station in the U.S.

The four were later all offered positions in the production company, Chen said. However, the students had to forego the opportunity, because scholarship recipients are required to work in Taiwan for at least one year after completion of their studies, she added.

Wen Chuan-hao, another scholarship student, enrolled at the industrial design program at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His design of an espresso machine was so outstanding that it won first place, and US$20,000 in prize money, at a recent competition sponsored by home appliance maker KitchenAid.

The scholarship program, in place since 2005, has thus far helped 87 students pursue their dreams of studying abroad, the MOE said. (HZW)
