A seminar on gender-based analysis plus was staged Nov. 24 by Taiwan and Canada, with the like-minded partners setting out their commitment to establish partnership for gender equality, according to the Executive Yuan.
Hosted by the EY’s Department of Gender Equality and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the daylong event involved discussions on methods for assessing how diverse groups of women, men, and gender diverse people may experience policies, programs, and initiatives.
High-profile participants included CTOT head Jordan Reeves and DGE Director-General Wu Hsiu-chen. In addition, over 100 officials from the central and local governments attended via video link.
According to Wu, Taiwan and Canada share the fundamental values of freedom, democracy, human rights and gender equality. This is evidenced by both countries ranking top in related fields in Asia and North America, she added.
In response, Reeves said that the “plus” in gender-based analysis plus acknowledges that GBA+ is not just about differences between biological sexes and socio-cultural genders, but also other identity factors and how the interaction between these factors influences the way people experience government policies and initiatives.
Since 2006, Taiwan has been promoting gender mainstreaming to ensure the rights of people of different genders in any planned policy action, including legislation and programs. (DL-E)
