Taiwan’s digital COVID-19 certificates, recently recognized by the European Commission, are available online starting Dec. 28, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center.

All people in Taiwan with a valid passport can apply for the certificates via the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s website. For ROC (Taiwan) nationals, a passport number is required, along with one of three other identifications: national ID card and National Health Insurance numbers; a Citizen Digital Certificate; or a Fast Identity Online authentication ID.

Foreigners must submit the Alien Resident Certification identification number, along with one of three other IDs: NHI, entry-and-exit permit or passport numbers.

All applicants can choose whether a vaccination certificate or a test result certificate will be issued before downloading or printing. A serial number will also be generated by the site for users to print at a convenience store.

The CECC said the certificate is linked to the EU Digital COVID Certificate system. This means Taiwan certificate holders can use it in 60 countries and territories, including 27 EU member states, the center added.

The U.S. also recognizes the EU system as proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the CECC said, adding that Canada-based International Air Transport Association has designated the EU system as equivalent to its travel pass.

In a statement issued earlier this month, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said effective Dec. 22, individuals inoculated with a vaccine authorized by the European Medicines Agency, as well as issued with requisite digital certificates, will be allowed to enter and move freely in the EU.

These travelers will not be required to produce a negative polymerase chain reaction test taken 72 hours prior to boarding flights to the EU nor undergo quarantine upon arrival, the MOFA said. (YCH-E)
