Taiwan Gender Equality Week 2022 highlighting gender equality and Taiwan’s women-led action to tackle climate change is set to kick off March 8, focusing on the government’s commitment to working with like-minded partners around the world.
Co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taipei City-based Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, the event leads up to the 66th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women running March 14-25.
A Women’s Power Night reception will be held March 8 at the Taipei Guest House, featuring TGEW opening remarks by President Tsai Ing-wen and hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. There will be virtual attendance via pre-recorded video messages from Palau Vice President Jerrlyn Uduch Sengebau Senior and U.S. officials, and real-time attendees will include female ambassadors, cabinet members, corporate representatives, and NGO leaders.
Linked virtual event, the Climate Justice Leaders Forum is set to take place March 15 and focuses on women’s roles in tackling climate change. Participants include NGO leaders, officials and experts from America, Asia and Europe, the MOFA said, adding that Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua will outline Taiwan’s policies to enhance women’s participation in sustainable energy, former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, Baroness Natalie Bennett will outline her party’s environmental policy initiatives, while local climate activist Wang Hsuan-ju will be part of the NGO leaders’ dialogue.
These are complemented by parallel meetings at the NGO CSW Forum March 14 to 25, the MOFA said. Three city governments: Taipei, New Taipei and Taichung together with nearly 20 civil society groups are joining the forum, setting a new high for participants from Taiwan. They will host 27 parallel meetings, demonstrating the activism of Taiwan women, the ministry added.
In addition, the MOFA’s YouTube channel features a special short video “Power of Women in Taiwan” inspired by climate challenges for women around the world and how Taiwan women are responding. (YCH-E)
