English-language TV channel TaiwanPlus was launched Oct. 3 in Taipei City as part of government efforts to share the country’s perspectives and make its voice heard in the international arena, according to the Presidential Office.

During the launch event, President Tsai Ing-wen said the channel marks a milestone in the development of Taiwan’s media landscape, adding to its diversity and expanding its global reach. It follows the establishment of the TaiwanPlus video and news platform last August, she added.

The stories of Taiwan—ranging from its democratic transition, diverse cultures and effective pandemic response—should be shared with all, Tsai said.

As Taiwan’s global engagement continues to grow and more people take an interest in the country and its affairs, it is important to have a platform to portray Taiwan beyond its borders, she said.

According to Tsai, the channel is also expected to play a key role in the country’s Bilingual 2030 policy by providing high-quality English programming on topics close to home for local audiences. The development of bilingual talent is crucial to boosting Taiwan’s global competitiveness, she said, adding that improving the people’s communication abilities and engaging more with the international community will help people around the world see all that Taiwan has to offer.

Launched in 2017 under the name of Bilingual Nation 2030 and renamed in 2022, the Bilingual 2030 policy is targeted at helping Taiwan’s workforce connect with the world and attracting international enterprises to the country, enabling homegrown industries to tap into global markets and create high-quality jobs.
