The National Science and Technology Council’s Science and Technology Profession Medal was presented by Minister Wu Tsung-tsong to Jorg Polster, director general of the German Institute Taipei, July 24 in the capital.

According to the NSTC, Polster holds a doctorate in physics from Dresden University of Technology and took office at the GIT in 2021. He facilitated Wu’s meeting with Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Germany’s federal minister of education and research, during Wu’s visit to the EU member state last November, and paved the way for Stark-Watzinger’s trip to Taiwan in March of this year for the signing of a scientific and technological cooperation arrangement, the council added.

At the ceremony, Wu said that the pact had expanded the two countries’ collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence applications, batteries, hydrogen energy and semiconductors. He cited mutual visits from researchers as well as numerous online seminars that addressed AI applications and hydrogen energy topics as examples of this fruitful partnership, as well as cooperation projects launched to develop lithium batteries.

In his acceptance speech, Polster said it was a great honor to receive the medal. In addition to collaboration between academic institutions and universities, the director general said he is pleased to see that more bilateral exchanges were conducted between primary and secondary schools, and added that the GIT will continue to strengthen Germany’s partnership with Taiwan.
