226 Taipei, Taichung eateries feature in 2020 Michelin Guide

A total of 226 eateries in Taipei and Taichung cities feature in the 2020 Michelin Guide, according to the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transport and Communications Aug. 24.

Taipei and Taichung boast 170 and 56 venues, respectively. All of the establishments satisfy the high standards set down by the internationally acclaimed foodie bible.

The MOTC attributed the strong result to years of concerted efforts to promote the country’s distinctive cuisine in the international arena. This is supported by the results of bureau-conducted survey indicating that food is one of the main reasons for overseas visitors to travel to Taiwan, the ministry added.

Of Taipei’s 26 starred restaurants, four are new additions. These are A Cut, Logy, Molino de Urdaniz and Sushi Akira.

A Cut in Zhongshan District is a one-star serving prime cuts of beef from Australia and the U.S.; Logy in Daan District is a two-star specializing in Asian taster dishes; Molino de Urdaniz in Zhongshan District is a one-star presenting Mediterranean cuisine; and Sushi Akira, also in Zhongshan District, is a one-star offering Tokyo style, high-quality sushi.

For Taichung, Fleur de Sel in Xitun District is a one-star serving French cuisine; Forchetta, also in Xitun District, is a one-star creating East-West fusion cuisine; JL Studio in Nantun District is a two-star reinventing Singaporean and Southeast Asian fare; and Oretachi No Nikuya in West District, a one-star offering wagyu barbecue.

Taipei also boasts 79 Michelin Plate restaurants and 11 plate street food stalls, while Taichung possesses 31 plate restaurants.

The Michelin Guide’s three-star ranking system is based on reviews by experienced inspectors assessing quality of ingredients, mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, chef’s personality in the cuisine, value for money and consistency. Its plate symbol is for restaurants that have neither a star nor a Bib Gourmand.

Taipei and Taichung also made Michelin headline Aug. 24 with 75 venues featuring in the 2020 Bib Gourmand selection. Taipei’s lineup comprises 31 restaurants and 23 street food stalls, while Taichung—incorporated for the first time in the Bib—accounts for 21.

All Bib venues were assessed on the menu’s authenticity, quality and value for money. The bill for a three-course meal, excluding drinks, was capped at NT$1,000 (US$35). (TYT-E)
