A website chronicling the development of the Taiwan Model for combating coronavirus was launched by the Central Epidemic Command Center June 7, spotlighting the successful efforts of the government and front-line workers in managing the pandemic.

The site titled “Crucial Policy for Combating COVID-19” lays out Taiwan’s epidemic response under the headings pandemic situation, major events, border policy, pandemic preparedness stockpile, community transmission prevention, bailout package, test and R&D policy, and nosocomial infection control. It follows significant events since December last year, when coronavirus was first documented in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

According to the CECC, the country’s success in limiting the number of confirmed coronavirus cases is thanks to the Taiwan Model’s focus on early deployment of disease-fighting measures, strict quarantine and contact tracing protocols, and transparent communication with the public. These features were a response to lessons learned during the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak, the center added.

Intended to help other countries around the world with their current and future pandemic responses, the new website provides an easy to use reference point for those interested in the Taiwan Model, the CECC said.

Latest statistics from the CECC reveal 443 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan as of June 7, with seven deaths. A total of 6,996,648 cases have been identified in 186 other countries and territories. (TYT-E)
