Taiwan’s government has joined forces with Washington-based Nadia’s Initiative to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Sinjar, Iraq, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oct. 18, spotlighting how Taiwan Can Help manage the pandemic.
A total of 100,000 surgical masks obtained in cooperation with Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. were distributed among families and essential workers in camps for internally displaced people in the region by NI.
Established in 2018 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad, who survived an attack by the terrorist group ISIS in Sinjar, NI advocates for resources and policy changes to protect and support survivors of sexual violence while rebuilding local communities.
According to the MOFA, Taiwan has been a member of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS since October 2014. It was also the first to answer the call for assistance by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during the initiative’s ministerial meeting in February 2019 when it announced a donation of US$500,000 to support NI.
During a public ceremony held June 28, 2019, at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, former TECRO Rep. Stanley Kao was commended by Murad and several U.S. officials, who thanked Taiwan for the generous donation, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
