Taiwan is strengthening cooperation with like-minded partners so to safeguard freedom, stability and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu Nov. 10.

Taiwan is on the front line facing China’s expansionism, Wu said. The future of Taiwan and liberal democracies around the world are at stake, he added.

Wu made the remarks while addressing the virtual “Risks to Peace and Order in Asia” webinar hosted by U.K.-based China Research Group. High-profile participants included members of the British House of Commons such as Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and CRG leader; Neil O’Brien, CRG co-leader; Alicia Kearns; Tony Lloyd, former shadow secretary of state for Scotland and Northern Ireland; and Royston Smith.

According to Wu, the future of Asia has come to a crossroad. Coordinated approaches are required to ensure regional rules-based systems remain intact, Wu said, citing developments in the China-India border area, Hong Kong, South China Sea and Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank the U.K. for supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the activities, mechanisms and meetings of the World Health Organization like the World Health Assembly, as well as paying closer attention to emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

Established in April by conservative members of parliament in the U.K., the group promotes debate and fresh thinking on how Britain should respond to the rise of China. (YCH-E)
