The visit of a high-level bipartisan delegation comprising former U.S. security officials to Taiwan is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 1.
Led by retired Adm. Michael Glenn Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the group comprises Michele A. Flournoy, former undersecretary of defense for policy; Meghan L. O’Sullivan, former deputy national security adviser; and Michael Green and Evan S. Medeiros, both former directors for Asian affairs of the National Security Council.
During the delegation’s two-day visit, members will receive an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te, as well as meet with Premier Su Tseng-chang and National Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng. They will also attend a dinner banquet and luncheon hosted by Tsai and Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, respectively.
According to the MOFA, the group is the second sent to Taiwan by U.S. President Joe Biden following the first headed by former Sen. Christopher Dodd in April 2021. The visit is particularly significant given the situation in Ukraine, the ministry said, adding that it underscores the importance the U.S. attaches to bilateral relations and its unwavering commitment to Taiwan.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu welcomed the high-level bipartisan delegation of former #US security officials led by Adm Mike Mullen & comprising @micheleflournoy, @OSullivanMeghan, Michael Green & Evan Medeiros.
