Taiwan’s delegation continued its participation at the Our Ocean Conference in Palau April 14, sharing the country’s experience in advancing global marine conservation efforts.

During the second day of the event, Environmental Protection Administration Minister Chang Tzi-chin delivered a speech at a panel discussion. Chang outlined the government’s progress in bringing Taiwan’s policies in line with global standards, as well as achievements in promoting environmental sustainability, citing its over 60-percent and 90-percent recycling rates for waste and PET bottles, respectively.

The minister also detailed Taiwan’s policies in capturing riverline litter originating from the land, controlling waste fishing gear and nets and managing marine debris.

Equally important was the meeting between key members of the Taiwan delegation and Palau President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. and Amatlain Kabua, the Marshall Island’s permanent representative to the U.N.

Whipps and Kabua praised Taiwan’s advanced grain R&D technology and atmospheric environment knowledge. It is hoped that Taiwan will continue to work with its allies and countries in the Pacific to address key issues and threats stemming from climate change, they said.

In response, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang reaffirmed the government’s dedication to cooperating with its partners in promoting sustainable marine development in the spirit of mutual assistance.

Another highlight was the pledge made by Tsai Ching-piao, deputy minister of the Ocean Affairs Council, to implement a smart navigation services development program to ensure nautical security, as well as enhance the country’s capabilities in conducting international search and rescue operations and combating cross-border crimes.

The Embassy of the ROC (Taiwan) in the Republic of Palau tweeted “EPA Minister Chang hammered home a powerful message during the #OurOcean Conference’s Tackling Marine Pollution session in #Palau. #TaiwanCanHelp overcome this challenge by sharing expertise & spurring global cooperation, progressive policymaking & circular economy solutions!” (SFC-E)
