The visit of U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and her delegation to Taiwan is warmly welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs May 30.
Duckworth’s three-day trip includes an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, meetings with Premier Su Tseng-chang and Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua, and a banquet hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.
This is the second time in less than 12 months for Duckworth to travel to Taiwan. The first trip took place June 6, 2021, when she arrived on a special military flight with Sens. Dan Sullivan and Chris Coons to announce a U.S. donation of COVD-19 vaccines.
According to the MOFA, Duckworth is a member of the Senate Taiwan Caucus who jointly initiated a number of bills in support of the country. She also signed numerous letters and proposed various measures aimed at deepening bilateral economic and security cooperation, the ministry said.
Duckworth’s visit is the second by U.S. lawmakers this year following the bipartisan congressional delegation led by Sen. Lindsey Graham in April, the MOFA said. It further demonstrates the rock-solid support of the U.S for Taiwan and importance placed on bilateral relations, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Deputy Minister Tseng extended the warmest of welcomes to @SenDuckworth & her delegation. We thank our country’s good friend for the rock-solid support & wish her a productive 3-day visit aimed at deepening understanding on various issues at the heart of #Taiwan-#US ties.” (DL-E)
