The decision by the U.S. government to approve a proposed arms sale to Taiwan estimated at US$120 million is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 9.
Made following a request by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., the sale encompasses naval ship spare parts, system spare parts and related equipment.
According to the MOFA, the sale is the third of the year and fourth since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. It underscores U.S. government commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, the ministry said.
The deal further highlights the importance the U.S. places on Taiwan’s security needs, the MOFA said, adding that it will help modernize the armed forces while enhancing the country’s defense readiness.
Given China’s ongoing military expansion and campaign of coercion against Taiwan, the government is resolute in its policy of enhancing self-defense capabilities, the MOFA said.
Every effort is being made to deepen the strategic partnership with the U.S. while strengthening Taiwan’s asymmetrical combat capabilities to safeguard the rules-based international order as well as regional peace, stability and prosperity, the MOFA said.
