Latest US arms sale to Taiwan welcomed by MOFA

July 18, 2022
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes Department of State’s authorization July 16 of a US$108 million arms sale to Taiwan. (MOFA)
U.S. Department of State’s authorization of a US$108 million arms sale to Taiwan is deeply appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 16.

The fifth of its kind and fourth this year since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the sale comprises spare and repair parts for tanks and combat vehicles, as well as technical and logistical support.

According to the MOFA, the sale underscores the commitment of the U.S. to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances. It also strengthens the capacity of the armed forces to defend the people and the country’s freedom and democratic way of life, the ministry said.

Taiwan thanks the U.S. for its rock-solid support, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue deepening cooperation with like-minded partners worldwide in advancing cross-strait and regional peace, prosperity, stability and rules-based order.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “We welcome the #US government’s approval of a US$108M arms sale to #Taiwan. It shows U.S. commitment to the #TaiwanRelationsAct & #SixAssurances, & allows us to maintain a robust defense while promoting peace, stability & prosperity in the Taiwan Strait & across the #IndoPacific.” (DL-E)
