The decision by the U.S. government to approve arms sales to Taiwan estimated at US$428 million is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 7.
Made following requests by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., the sales encompass stock replenishment of aircraft spare parts, consumables, and accessories, as well as repair and replacement support for the F-16, C-130, Indigenous Defense Fighter and other aircraft and systems of U.S. origin.
According to the MOFA, the sales are the sixth this year and seventh since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. They underscore the U.S. government’s commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, it said.
The deals further highlight the importance Washington places on Taiwan’s security needs, the ministry said, adding that they will help expedite enhancement of the country’s air defense readiness.
In the face of China’s ongoing military provocation and campaign of coercion, the government is fully committed to strengthening Taiwan’s self-defense, the MOFA said.
The country is bolstering strategic partnership with the U.S. to safeguard national security and the rules-based international order, it added.
In a press release issued the same day, the Presidential Office thanked Washington for its continued acknowledgement of the critical importance of Taiwan’s national defense.
The PO said the government is resolute in its determination to defend the country’s sovereignty to ensure peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific. (SFC-E)
