The government of Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding July 19 that facilitates the donation of US$2.5 million to Ukraine for the purpose of constructing a bridge connecting Obolonsky Island with the rest of Kyiv.

Bob.L.J. Chen, head of Taipei Representative Office in Poland, met virtually with Mariia Bochenkova, chair of the charitable foundation Future Kyiv, to sign the document. With this donation, Taiwan more than doubles the contribution sent earlier this year from the Greater Paris Metropolitan Region.

The Obolonsky Island bridge project is a significant manifestation of the unity and cooperation of the democratic community, and it demonstrates the care the people of Taiwan and France have for those in Ukraine, the MOFA said.

The ministry said these countries share a firm commitment to the universal values of freedom, democracy and human rights, and added that Taiwan, as another country confronted with authoritarian expansion, empathizes with the anguish of the Ukrainians. Taiwan’s contribution of US$5 million pledged June 1 to a Lithuanian-led reconstruction project and the June 30 shipment of the first batch of 100 plus essential vehicles are two of the most recent relief efforts Taiwan has participated in since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the MOFA said.
