The visit by a Baltic parliamentary delegation is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 5.

Among the five-member group are three chairs of foreign affairs committees: Marko Mihkelson from Estonia, Zygimantas Pavilionis from Lithuania, and Rihards Kols from Latvia. This is the first time in recent years that the three Baltic countries have jointly formed a delegation to Taiwan, the MOFA said.

During the six-day stay, the group will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, Premier Chen Chien-jen, President of the Legislative Yuan, You Si-kun and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu. The members will attend two banquets hosted by the Legislative Yuan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs respectively and visit the Ministry of Digital Affairs.

The members’ itinerary features in-depth dialogue with high-ranking officials and think tank experts on issues related to the deepening of bilateral relationships and formation of an Asian-European link for regional security, the ministry said.

Taiwan and the three Baltic countries have long cooperated in academia, science and technology. The MOFA highly appreciates that the three states’ representatives all voiced support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international bodies at this year’s World Health Assembly, further strengthening the relationships.

Based on shared universal values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, the visit will deepen understanding of cross-strait issues and regional security. The MOFA envisions further cooperation, exchange and joint response to the threat of autocratic power as the three former eastern bloc nations also face cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns and cognitive warfare.
