The statement issued Sept. 18 by Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa promoting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is highly welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Issued by Kamikawa in her capacity as chair of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York, the statement reiterated the importance of cross-strait peace and stability as indispensable to global security and prosperity. It called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues and reaffirmed support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.

According to the MOFA, the group members reiterated that China has a responsibility to uphold the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter. They expressed serious concern over the situation in the East and South China Seas and strongly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the region by force or coercion.

The latest statement follows the joint statement by the G7 foreign ministers in April and the G7 Hiroshima Leaders’ Communique in May, the ministry said, adding that such unwavering support for Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by its government and people.

As a responsible member of the Indo-Pacific community, Taiwan will continue to cooperate closely with G7 member countries and other like-minded partners to defend the rules-based international order, ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific and promote global stability and prosperity, the MOFA said.
