A webinar on climate justice was staged March 15 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bringing together female leaders from home and abroad to share their insights on combating climate change.

Jointly organized with Taipei City-based Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, the event is part of Taiwan Gender Equality Week 2022 in the lead up to the 66th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women running March 14-25.

According to the MOFA, high-profile participants included Wang Mei-hua, Taiwan’s minister of economic affairs; Kitlang Kabua, minister of education, sports and training of the Marshall Islands; Baroness Natalie Louise Bennett, member of the British House of Lords and former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales; and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

During the one-day event, Wang outlined Taiwan’s policies to enhance women’s involvement in sustainable energy development. According to the economic minister, related female participation is 26 percent in Taiwan, higher than the averages of 15 percent and 21 percent for the Asia-Pacific and the world, respectively.

Similarly, Kabua said that the government of the Marshall Islands, having experienced firsthand the impact of climate change, is continually providing education and training for women, with Taiwan acting as a role model when it comes to sustainable development.

Bennett stressed the need to also implement system change to create an even more equitable society, while Wu said cooperation between Taipei and Boston in promoting green energy can serve as an inspiration for cities around the world to build a more resilient future.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Great minds always think alike on harnessing the power of women in protecting the environment & combating #ClimateChange. Watch the #Taiwan4ClimateJustice Seminar & share in the insights of luminaries like Minister Wang, @wutrain, @natalieben & Minister Kabua. Yes! #TaiwanCanHelp.” (SFC-E)
